[Hazards vs. Minion/Hero] Auto attack enhancement

Post by Bandobras Took » Thu Sep 07, 2006 12:02 am

This thing did surprisingly well in a game I played yesterday.  It's simple and doesn't rely on broken cards (i.e. Unabated).

3 x Trolls from the Mountains
3 x Cave-drake
3 x Ambusher
3 x Awaken Defenders
3 x Arouse Defenders
3 x Awaken Denizens
3 x Arouse Denizens
2 x Wild Fell Beast
Knights of the Prince
3 x Incite Denizens
3 x Incite Defenders

There's nothing spectacular about it really.  It's based on two ideas:

1) Covert Minion companies often rely on cancelling detainment attacks at :B: and :F:.

2) Many Overt Minion companies get their mileage from :R:.

For the first, the combination of Awaken/Arouse Defenders slices through that -- most detainment attacks at minion :B: and :F: are of the "each character faces one strike at x prowess."  The combination of those two raises the prowess by two, makes the attack non-detainment, and makes it impossible to cancel.

Also, against Overt burn decks, secondary auto attacks in Gondor become a lot nastier, while the combo of Incite/Arouse Defenders makes Beorn's House a fearsome target.

For :R: it's basically the same principle -- a lot of Minion companies cancel their way past :R:, Incite the Denizens and Arouse them to cut through that.

The creatures are grab-bag -- heavy wilderness for Eriador, and Wild Beasts for tapping companies in Mordor.  Cave Drakes and Ambushers for specific targets.

For vs. Heroes, take out the Defender cards and stick in the Minion cards.

Why no Tidings of Bold spies? Add insult to injury.

You could do that, but you'd have to lower the number of other events to stick them in.  The end result of that is to make the auto attacks weaker, anyway.  To use Tidings for full effect, you'd also be playing the enhancers face up instead of surprising your opponent with extra strikes/prowess.

So sticking in Tidings would result in an overall weakening, I think.  As it currently stands, you can tell which sites your opponent will visit in a couple of turns and simply discard enhancements for the sites they're not going to visit.

I would dump the trolls.  Most minion decks stay away from wilderness as much as possible.  As far as going through 3 wilderness you'd probably go through several games before any minion player did that.  Instead put in Landroval, Beorning Toll, and maybe Galhadrim or something.  You can always put some deep wilderness creatures in your sideboard just in case.

Dropped the Trolls and vs. Heroes put in Corsairs to help against Coastal decks; vs. Minions put in Orc-Guards to help detain Shadow-Hold squatters.

In other notes, an advantage of this is that it lends itself well to psyching your opponent out -- play Incite on the site and play any card on guard -- your opponent will have to assume it's another enhancer. :)

The vs. Hero version of this deck worked beautifully the other night, turning the Hero Geann-a-Lisch from a modest 4 at 8 auto attack to a terrifying 8 at 11. :)

Hi everyone, I'm quite new on this forum. I tried to use this hazard strategy with a few adjustment of mine. In my opinion it's unnecessary to pump up at full rage the autoattacks because after the first game your opponent knows what you're going to play.

# Hazard (30) (vs Minion)

1 Adûnaphel
1 ambusher
2 An Unexpected Outpost
1 awaken defenders
2 awaken denizens
1 cave-drake
1 cave worm
1 Daelomin at Home
1 elf-ord revealed in wrath
1 fear fire foes
1 hoarmurath of dir
1 incite defenders
2 Incite Denizens (TD)
1 indur dawndeath
1 kamul the easterling
1 Lady of the Golden Wood
1 Mouth of Sauron
2 orc-guard
1 Pallando the Soul-keeper
1 pukelmen
1 Revealed to all Watchers
1 thief
2 tiding of bold spies
2 unabated in malice

vs hero:

OUT:
lady
elf-lord
pallando
pukelmen
fear fire foes
incite defenders
awaken defenders

IN:
ren
uvatha
corsari di umbar x2
2 incite minions
1 awaken minions
Prince of Dol Amroth, kinsman of the Lord, with gilded banners bearing his token of the Ship and the Silver Swan...grey-eyed, dark-haired...
